Emigrating to Australia has a lot of appeal but it’s not all sunshine and ‘chucking another prawn on the barbie’. You need to be realistic and manage your expectations; moving to Australia from the UK is a big step, you must be certain it’s the right one for you and your family.

Is it always sunny in Australia?

Many people that have not actually been to Australia assume that every day is sunny and perfect, well that is not entirely true however, Australia gets way more sunshine in comparison to the UK!

Sydney itself gets 75% more sunshine than London annually.

However, London and Sydney get roughly the same number of rainy days. The type of rainfall is different in Australia as the rain is usually short and very heavy compared to long, light rain that goes on for ages.

As Australia is a massive country, they have micro-climates; Sydney is a ‘temperature’ climate which is like the Mediterranean.

Whereas, somewhere like Melbourne is more varied as it can rain one day and be scorching the next. If you enjoy the climate of the UK, then Tasmania would be the place for you!

What is the pay like in Australia?

Usually, Australian salaries are more in value than UK salaries however, it does depend on what profession you re in.

On a broad scale, the pay is 20 to 30% higher in Australia in comparison to the UK.

Tradespeople tend to get well paid in Australia as well as bar workers as there is a high minimum wage in Australia!

On the other hand, if you are something like a high paid investment banker in the UK you will not be paid the same high wage for it in Australia as it is not a financial centre!

Pay is extremely high for jobs within the medical industry as Australia’s healthcare system has a lot more private work. In Australia nearly all large companies are in Melbourne or Sydney.

Sydney tends to be pricier than Melbourne when looking at settling down and buying a house.

Choosing a removalist

One of the first steps when emigrating from the UK to Australia is to pick and hire a removalist company; it can be difficult to pick a good one as there are so many to choose from!

Even though you are moving your stuff across the world, the prices tend to not be too bad as there are many different removalists to choose from.

If you inform removalist companies that you are getting quotes, then they usually lower their price.

You will receive a quote within a few days of them coming to assess your belongings, seeing how much you have.

Normally a three-bedroom house will fit inside of a 20-foot container; it can work out cheaper if you have less stuff to share it with other customers.

As well as removalist costs, you also need to think about things like insurance and storage costs.

It is always a good idea to get your belonging insured in case anything happens to them in transit.

Finding accommodation

After emigrating from the UK to Australia you will have to rent for a while.

This is so you have time to find the area that you want to settle down in.

Many people think about how nice it would be to live near the beach however, when you think about your day-to-day life such as, budget, how close it is to schools, shops and work then it does not seem so easy.

Most rental properties in Australia comes unfurnished.

You might then need to rent furniture until yours arrives, unless you had it sent in advance.

There are a lot of companies that do rent out furniture, so it is not the end of the world!

There are stores such as Target and Kmart that sell cheap items that you could use in the house.

Obtaining an Australian bank account

The four major banks in Australia are, Commonwealth (CBA), ANZ, Westpac and NAB; these banks are huge, and they make a massive amount of money.

They do not have many differences between them.

The Australian banks charge you if you use an ATM from a bank that is not the one that you are using so it is more cost efficient to use an ATM of the bank that you are using over there.

Why banks are not the best option when transferring your money over.

You can use your Visa or Mastercard to pay for everyday things but after time the costs add up and this is not cost efficient.

After you have fully emigrated to Australia then it would be more cost efficient for you to transfer over a big sum of your money.

When transferring your money over, if you use a bank, you will realise that they are awfully expensive, and they have uncompetitive exchange rates.

Money transfer specialists such as Regency FX can save you a tonne of money on large transfers!

As money transfer specialists have a lot less overheads than then bank, they can afford to give you a better deal and a lower rate.

While some money transfer specialists are online-only or do not offer much guidance, Regency FX offer you all the guidance you need and there is someone to talk to on the other side of the phone!

Australian mobile providers information

You cannot keep your existing contract or number from the UK to Australia, you will need to get a new contract and a new phone.

The three main mobile providers in Australia are, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone; Telstra has the best coverage and therefore is the most expensive whereas Vodafone has the worst coverage but is the cheapest, you pay for what you get.

There are also alternatives that use these main providers signal, but they are cheaper.

Private or public healthcare?

Australia is known to have one of the best healthcare systems in the whole world whether that is public or private.

As a Brit, if you have a valid visa then you are covered for the whole of your stay in Australia as the UK and Australia have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement.

Long term residents have a Medicare cad available to them, this allows full access to the government-run system and you can go into “bulk billing” dentists or doctors and you will not be charged for this.

Nearly 60% of Australians have private health insurance as this has lower waiting times and generally better facilities for you to use. The main healthcare systems are HCF, BUPA, NIB and Medibank.

The education system (public, private, catholic)

Emigrating-to-Australia

Australia’s educational industry did well by global OECD standards, and they ranked 14th in the world a few years ago.

The normal size classes are around 24 for primary school and high school.

The three main types of schools within Australia are, government schools which have 65% of the students, then catholic schools which have 20% of students, finally private and independent schools have 15% of students.

Catholic schools in Australia are kind of a way of sending your child to a “semi-private” school without the huge costs; you do not need to be catholic to go there.

Driving in Australia

In Australia you drive on the left-hand side of the road like the UK and the rules are remarkably like the UK too!

Australian police are known to hand out fines if the rules are not obeyed and these fines can be quite pricey compared to the UK.

Within three months of arriving in Australia you will need to get an Australian State driver’s license.

Each different state has their own licenses; to obtain one of these you need your UK license and a proof of address, you will not need to do a driving test though!

Obtaining the right visa

Prior to moving to Australia, you need to know what visa it is that you will need.

The four main types of visa are visitor, student, temporary residence and migration. Most visa systems are complicated; so, I will explain more common choices and what it means to you.

With a visitor visa you cannot work however, if you have a student visa and a work permit then you can work anything up to 20 hours a week whilst you are still studying.

Working holiday visas are only available for people under the age of 31, you can live and work in Australia for 12 months, but you are only allowed to work a maximum of 6 months with any one employer.

People who visit Australia regularly over a long period of time such as entertainers, businessmen and parents of children living in Australia can have a multiple-entry visa.

You can apply for a skilled visa if you have skills of qualifications that Australia needs, over 180 occupations are on the list for this!

A lot of people will pay an expert to help them with this process as it can be very daunting and confusing for someone with little knowledge on visas.

Visa approvals can take anything between weeks to months or sometimes years.

They can often refer to the rates that banks exchange at rather than what is available to you, the customer.
